PETROLEUM SPILL FINAL UPDATE - May 24th, 2005

Good Morning and Good News,

  • The Mobil station will be pulling the two gasoline tanks at about 1:30 this (Tuesday) afternoon! The asphalt was removed this morning and they are now excavating around the tanks.
  • The temporary treatment system went online on May 19. The seep has stopped in the ravine. As of noon yesterday, they have pumped a total of 29,079 gallons of water from the monitoring wells. They have collected a total of 40 gallons of free product from the wells, 30 gallons from the well closest to the ravine and 10 gallons from the next closest well. Free product has not been identified in any of the other wells.
  • The more permanent, sophisticated system has arrived and is being set up this week.
  • DEP met with Paxtang Borough yesterday. Both parties have agreed that based upon the reduction in odors, and the cessation of the seep, it was time to reopen the Greenbelt. The Borough will post new signs advising people to avoid the area of the stream and under drain dams. DEP staff will check the area on a daily basis. The Greenbelt is now reopened.
  • The underflow dams will remain in place as a safeguard. Any residual petroleum product that collects behind the dams will continue to be removed.
