PETROLEUM SPILL UPDATE - May 13th, 2005

Good Afternoon,

  • 5300 gallons total of product have been recovered to date, with about 150 gallons on the last two days.
  • Fourteen monitoring wells, the three original wells and 11 that have been drilled since April 28.
  • Two of the wells, located near the ravine, are designated as recovery wells.
  • A best case scenario indicates that cleanup of the groundwater could begin as early as May 23. A start date will depend on how quickly the necessary equipment can be obtained and set up.
  • The station owner had a tank testing company on site this morning to perform a vacuum test on the three suspect tanks. One of the gasoline tanks failed the test.
  • This afternoon, DEP ordered the station to remove the two gasoline tanks and associated piping within fifteen days. The order also requires the company to submit a detailed cleanup plan.
  • Odors/Fumes:
  • Today, the contractor, EP&S, continues to reinforce the upper damn in preparation of any inclement weather this coming weekend. They will continue to remove free product from the lower damn and will do so today till approximately 5:00 p.m.
  • The contractor continues to monitor, maintain, and replaced (if needed) the oil absorbent booms.
  • EP&S will have a crew remain on call this coming weekend to respond to any needs at the site.
  • The crew will conduct periodic checks of the booms and underflow damns over the weekend. If the weather is nice, someone will check the situation a minimum of twice a day. If there is inclement weather, there will be more frequent checks.
